Hey Miami and Davie, do you want to compete in the World Championships of Submission Wrestling? Then you want to compete in the...
The ADCC is the world championships of submission grappling and is the most prestigious submission tournament in the world. Countries from around the world send their best grapplers to represent in the world championships - which are held once every two years. In the men's divisions, there are five weight classes and sixteen grapplers from around the world per weight class... in the women's divisions, there are two weight classes and eight competitors per weight class. A few of the competitors are invited because of the reputation and accomplishments - the rest make it by winning their region's trials. In North America, there is a trials event to qualify. It's an honor to a country if they are able to send a representative to the ADCC World Championships... and it's an even bigger honor if your martial arts school is one of the few schools in the world to be able to produce a competitor to compete in the ADCC... Well, Miami's Freestyle Fighting Academy has produced not one... not two... not three... but FOUR ADCC COMPETITORS! For the past six years, the FFA has sent one or more competitors to the ADCC! That is three events in a row! In 2005, we sent Marcos Avellan, David Avellan, and Rima Avellan... in 2007, we sent David Avellan... and in 2009 we are sending Enrico Cocco and David Avellan! We are the only martial arts academy in Miami to have sent four people to the ADCC... and we are the only gym in Miami to have a THREE-TIME ADCC COMPETITOR (David Avellan), the youngest person to compete in the ADCC from Miami (Enrico Cocco) and the ONLY woman to ever compete in the ADCC in Miami (Rima Avellan)! You have to understand the significance of this... if you aspire to compete in the world's best grappling tournament... the choice is very simple... if you live in Miami, the place to go is FFA. We are always competing in the event and producing more and more competitors. Pick up the phone and call your local grappling and MMA schools and ask them if they have any people that train in that specific facility that has competed in the ADCC... Be careful when asking this question... there are gyms in Miami that are part of a large association of schools... and some of these schools may have someone who have competed in ADCC... but NOT in Miami. In other words, if someone from a sister school in Brazil competed in ADCC and you ask them, "Excuse me, but has ABC Academy sent anyone to the ADCC?" They may reply "Yes" because their sister school in Brazil did. The fact is that NO gym in Miami has sent FOUR competitors to the ADCC and there isn't a single gym with a 3-TIME Competitor, such as David Avellan or with a 21 year old competitor such as Enrico Cocco. Here is a breakdown of the tournaments: ADCC 2005 Rima Avellan in ADCC 2005
ADCC 2005 was the debut of the women's division! Only sixteen women are invited in the whole world - eight for the lightweight tournament and eight for the heavyweight tournament. Due to her incredible resume, Rima Avellan was selected to represent her native country Canada in the lightweight World Championships! Why did she receive this honor? Rima hit the grappling scene a few years ago and has made quite the impact in the tournament circuit. Rima finished first place in every tournament she competed in Canada. Other highlights include taking second place in the Arnold Classic (one of the largest American National tournaments). She also competed in the BJJ Pan-American Games and finished 3rd place. She then eventually flew to Brazil to compete in the World Championships of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (the Mundial). She was the first Canadian ever to medal in the Mundial!
It was a great honor for her to compete in the first ever women's world championships! She lost in the first round versus Megumi Fuji. Rima and Marcos shortly after got married and she now runs the Women-Only Fitness Bootcamp and the Women-Only Martial Arts program at the Freestyle Fighting Academy. Marcos Avellan in ADCC 2005
FFA Instructor Marcos Avellan wins the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) North American Trials! In North America, there is a trials event to qualify. For the trials event, the ADCC selects eight American grapplers for each weight class to battle it out for the right to represent North America in the world championships in May 2005. Marcos Avellan was selected for the 193.5 pound weight class. For the past few years prior, Marcos had competed at a much lighter weight... 155 pounds! But through rigorous training, weight lifting, and diet - Marcos was able to bring his body weight up to 198 pounds. Coming into the trials, his opponents were expecting to see a pudgy and out of shape Avellan - instead they saw a ripped, strong, and fit fighter!
Marcos tore through the tournament, winning three matches and shutting out his opponents - nobody scoring a single point on him! To win the tournament, Marcos defeated Canadian grappling champion Nick Ring, multiple-time Grappler's Quest Champion Rick McCauley, and multiple-time Grappler's Quest Champion Justin Garcia. In the final match versus Garcia, Avellan had to grapple twenty minutes straight! One martial arts reporter, Alan "Gumby" Marques from onthemat.com, described the final match this way:
He further added,
With this honor, Marcos brought FFA to the international scene once again by being one of 16 men in the ADCC tournament. He lost in the first round in overtime versus Japanese sensation Shinya Aoki. Marcos is very proud to have represented FFA and our country in the world championships!
David Avellan in ADCC 2005
In 2005, this was a great year for Master David Avellan. David had accumulated an impressive string of wins across the country - competing across the country literally every month. He had defeated world champions and black belts - such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Amaury Bitteti, Gracie prodigy Rener Gracie, Rickson Gracie Black Belt Jorge Pereira, Rafael Lovato, Todd Margolis, Moacir "Boca" Oliveira, and many other well known champions. It is because of his incredible resume that David Avellan did not need to go to the trials... like his teammate Rima, he got an invitation straight into the tournament (and he would continue to be invited straight into the tourney for every tournament since then). In the first round he faced off versus Japan's Hidemi Mihara. David dominated him and won by a score of 8-2. In the second round, he faced off versus Demian Maia. Maia is a BJJ black belt and world champion (and currently undefeated UFC fighter). David and him had a close match - but David lost a close match by points. Maia would go on to win the whole tournament.
Then the next day David jumped into the Absolute Division - which is a 16-man open division where all the champions from the day before are invited, plus extra invites throughout the weight classes. In this open weight tournament, David was invited. In the first round he faced off versus world champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. In an exciting match-up filled with submission attempts, David lost a close match by points that many considered one of the most exciting matches of the championships.
ADCC 2007 David Avellan in ADCC 2007
The picture above says it all... the highlight of this tournament was Master David defeating the current ADCC World Champion from the weight class above him in the Absolute Division! Master David faced off Xande Ribeiro in the Absolute Division the day after Xande won the Heavyweight World Title (which is one weight class heavier than David). But before we get into that match, let's describe his performance the day before... David entered the tourney and dominated his first opponent, winning by a barrage of points. In the second match, he lost in overtime, dramatically going out-cold from a choke. David's never-quit attitude prevented from tapping in the closing seconds of overtime. David felt the match was controversial, that he did enough to win and that it shouldn't have gone into overtime. Upset with this loss, David returned the next day and was invited to the Absolute Division again! He would shine again in the tourney! In the first round David defeated the ADCC Heavyweight Champion in Xande Ribeiro! Xande just won the weight class above David the day before - and now David was facing him in the Absolute Division in the first round. In a dramatically close match, David defeated the Brazilian champion in DOUBLE overtime! It was a HUGE win! In the second round, David would lose a razor close match to Robert Drysdale in overtime as well... Drysdale would go on to win the Absolute Division - submitting everyone in the tournament... except for David. This was a great performance by Miami's own David Avellan... and FFA is excited about David's chances in the ADCC 2009 in Barcelona!
ADCC 2009 Enrico Cocco Wins the East Coast Trials!
Coach Enrico Cocco, at 21 years old, went to compete in the USA East Coast Trials... and DOMINATED the tournament! In a 16-man division, Enrico ran thru all his opponents... submitting three of them in under 2 minutes! Enrico Cocco, who used to be known as the "Teenage Phenom", got his reputation from winning Men's Advanced divisions across the country... but he was only 15 to 16 years old! At 16, he tapped out his first BJJ Brown Belt... Having disappeared from the grappling scene for a little while to focus on MMA, Enrico made his return to grappling in early 2009 and won a couple of NAGA tournaments... and then he went to New Jersey to compete in the ADCC USA East Coast Trials... That is when Enrico put on a SHOW! He dominated his first opponent by a barrage of points, submitted his second opponent by triangle choke, then submitted his third opponent (Brian McLaughlin) by guillotine in under a minute, and then submitted Jacob Wolkmann in the finals by foot lock in about a minute as well! Everyone was impressed! Master Renzo Gracie approached Enrico to congratulate him - along with a whole gang of black belts. Some popular grapplers approached Master Marcos and asked, "Was that the teen phenom??? I thought he disappeared..." Nope... he is back... but now he is just the PHENOM! He is back! Coach Enrico, at 21 years old, is the youngest person in Miami to qualify for the ADCC tournament! He will be flying to Barcelona this September to compete and hopefully bring him the gold!

David Avellan to get an Invite to ADCC 2009 Master David Avellan got a THIRD invite to the ADCC and will be competing side by side with teammate Enrico Cocco! FFA will be the only gym in Miami in 2009 to be sending two competitors to the ADCC!
